Rainforests
Tropical rainforests cover approximately 8% of the world's land surface - an area of approximately 1.2 billion hectares - and yet contain over half of the earth's species of animals and plants.
Tropical rainforests took between 60 and 100 million years to evolve and are believed to be the oldest and most complex land-based ecosystem on earth, containing over 30 million species of plants and animals. That's half of the Earth's wildlife and at least two-thirds of its plant species!
It is estimated that, if we do not change our course of action, there will not be any rainforests remaining in 50 years time - that's in your lifetime!

Charities, social enterprises and voluntary organisations need funding to continue their good works and research; the encouragement to donate is strong and the decision is a very difficult and a very personal one.
Greener View raises the profile of grassroots organisations in Scotland that are full of talented, dedicated, hard working people, working on very small budgets to improve the lives of local people. Each issue we highlight one of these organisations (of our own choosing) and we have reproduced some of the articles of the last few months for you here.
When considering your donation, take a look around your local community and see if there is an organisation there that could benefit, often all they ask for is a little of your time.
JOHN MUIR TRUST
John Muir Trust (JMT) is the leading wild land conservation charity in the UK.
A membership organisation, it works with people and communities to ensure that wild land is protected, and that wild places are valued by everyone.
INTERNATIONAL NETWORK OF STREET PAPERS (INSP)
Since its inception in 1994, INSP has helped ~250,000 marginalised people to earn a dignified income and raise them out of poverty. The papers reach over 100 million readers globally every year.
VOLUNTEER NETWORK SCOTLAND
Scotland's gateway to Volunteering
Volunteer Centre Network in Scotland is the network that's trying hard to create a Scotland where everyone who wants to volunteer can do so. 32 volunteer centres operating out of some 60 offices so there should be one fairly close to you.
